Next week is our first summer meeting.  Same time!  Same place!  Come and enjoy good company.  We have a great summer line-up of books too!

See you there!

O. Henry

William Sydney Porter, better known as O. Henry

Wednesday night I was given a 1918 copy of O. Henry’s Four Million to devour over the next month.  (It was packaged in a ziploc bag in case it falls apart.) I opened it to find out a little about the author and book but all I found after the publisher’s page was this:

Not very long ago some one invented the assertion that there were only “Four Hundred” people in New York City who were really worth noticing.  But a wiser man has arisen–the census taker–and his larger estimate of human interest has been preferred in marking out the field of these little stories of the “Four Million.”

Then when I turned to the “Contents” page I found a story of familiar title, “The Gift of the Magi.”  “Memoirs of a Yellow Dog” caught my eye as well.  I look forward to enjoying a few moments of quiet time with O. Henry.

Feel free to grab a copy from my neighbor or read for free online at http://www.readprint.com/author-45/O-Henry.  After stirring your tall glass of lemonade you can sit down and enjoy these enchanting short stories.  He’s known as an author of surprise endings.  What a great way to begin the summer!
